Trove Illustrated: Division of Treasure

January 31st, 2015

The dungeon crawl is not over until all the adventurer’s get their share of the trove pile! Grandult the Mage, Gurk the Goblin Ranger (and rats), Dimlix the Dwarf, and Vinistreia the Sage assemble around the table, each with an eye on the glittering objects below.

“So many trove items to choose from…” mused Grandult. “Not a bad haul for our little dungeon crawl!”

In the illustration below are depicted some of the items found during our Twelve Days trove rolls. For this illustration, we took inspiration from an iconic piece of rpg art…

You are truly old skool is you recognize the inspiration for this piece!

Trove Roll: The Eleventh Day of WEGS-mas

January 5th, 2015

Today marks the eleventh day in our twelve day Trove Roll series. All of the prior rolls are tracked here. Today’s roll, however, was a bit unusual; it’s getting its very own blog post. It may seem odd to do this so late in the game, but I am stepping back to explain how a trove roll is made. This will explain why today’s roll is so special.

FB-Trove-Roll-77When a game master rolls for trove, the first table referenced is Table I: Trove Table Generator (d%). As noted in the title, the GM will roll their percentile dice for this table. The result is cross-referenced on the table and establishes what type of trove is found. As any WEGS player would expect, Wicked Success results (01, 02, 03) trigger something very very good, while Wicked Failure results (97, 98, 99, 00) trigger something awful.

The first roll today was “01” – a Wicked Success! Such a result on the table reads: “Roll thrice more on this table (ignore Wicked Failures).”

I now had to determine three trove items, instead of just one. My next roll was “03” – another Wicked Success! This result reads: “Roll twice more on this table.”

One roll spiraled into four. And here’s how they rolled out…

Mystic Skrowl: Blessed Warrior
The spell on the skrowl is unlocked when the user looks upon its inscriptions and intentionally acknowledges its power. A skrowl bypasses the Cast phase. Once unlocked, the spell has a success mark of 88% for its use, 8 SPS for its strength, and an 8 inning duration. Skrowls are 8/88 items. The success roll is based on the skrowl’s innate Grace/Ingenuity; it is not a character test for the inning.

Mystic Potion: Sphere of Light
Potion use is similar to skrowl use; once imbibed the potion has a success mark of 88% for its use and 8 SPS for its strength. Its duration is variable: it lasts 2d6 innings. The user can maintain the spell effect beyond this as per normal spell upkeep methods.

Weapon: Short Bow
+2 RS. This bonus was determined via a roll on Table II: Strength Bonus (INI Roll). This table randomly generates bonuses from +1 (common) to +6 (extremely rare).

Loot: Ring of Strength
+2 RS. Realm:Neutral. The ring has eight charges. It can be activated at any time to immediately enhance a strength score (from Inning thru Spante or vice versa).

For this last item, Ring of Strength, there is a Cursed Ring sub-table. It reads: “Ring of Weakness: There is (d10 x 2)% chance that the ring is cursed and has the exact opposite effect. It will activate at the most inopportune time (as per the whim of the Kreator). Such rings bond with their wearer and can only be removed by powerful incantations.”

Luckily, this ring failed that test!

Trove Roll: The Twelve Days of WEGS-mas

January 4th, 2015

In the spirit of that old school holiday jingle, The Twelve Days of Christmas, we’re “rolling out” a new trove item every day, from Christmas through January 6th. Daily results will be posted first on our WEGS Old Skool facebook page. We will update this blog post with the final results.

This is our way of  celebrating that the WOS Trove Tables are at their finalization point, and this little exercise will be a great way to give players a sneak peek at things to come. Those of you who have played with us at conventions over the last two years have seen the original Trove Deck in action. We have converted that concept into a series of trove tables which will be included in our next player’s tome: Odds-n-Gods, Volume I (our big WOS release for 2015). More news on this coming soon!

For now, let’s just enjoy…

The 12 Days of WEGS-mas

On the 1st day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Great Weapon: Great Spear (PRW)
Two handed spear with 2 SQR range (one diagonal allowed). If character rolls their PRW INI or less, Damage Die gains a +1 bonus.

On the 2nd day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Enchanted Sheath: Quiver of Zing (4 poison arrows)
Each arrow causes (d10 x 4) poison wounds. Before Damage Die roll, the character can pay a spoint to allow re-rolls of 1s and 2s. Spante poison rules apply (as per Sting skill).

On the 3rd day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Ort’s Loathful ArrowFB-Trove-Roll-77
+2 RS bonus. +1 Damage Die. -20 INV% penalty to foe.
By shouting “Ort” the arrow zings forth and strikes a foe. If foe fails INV test and suffers damage the arrow magically returns to its owner. If the foe takes no damage, the arrow loathes its return, and will only do so for a spoint at the Spante. Further non-damaging attacks allows it to ignore any attempt to call it back. The use of the arrow does not count as a character action (auto action).

On the 4th day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
+1 Scimitar, Grudge Blade
The blade glows when its sworn foe is within 44 SQR. The blade inflicts an additional (d10 x 2) enchanted wounds versus this foe. The Kreator decides the specific foe: Huge Spiders and their ilk.

On the 5th day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Medium Helmet, +2 ARM
Size appropriate for Medium Humnz/Young Elf.

On the 6th day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Hauberk, +12 ARM
Size appropriate for Medium Humnz/Young Elf.

On the 7th day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Ring of Invuln, +40 INV%
Realm: Mystic. 8 charges per day. The ring immediately enhances the wearer’s INV% score (from Inning thru Spante or vice versa). The power must be activated prior to an Invulnerability check.

On the 8th day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Chainmail Skirt, +4 ARM%
Chain Coif, +2 ARM%

On the 9th day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Enchanted Ring: Armour of Agorni (88 ING, 8 SPS)
Four charges. The ring has 88% ING and this is tested for blasting. If the test fails, the charge did not go off. No spoints are due for blasting. The wearer pays the Spante upkeep. Note that the ring bears the spell enchantment, not the user. The ring has 8 SPS for it spell effects. The ring has its own spoint pool (12 spoints), which can be spent to fuel its spell or the wearer’s own actions.

On the 10th day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Enchanted Blade: Battle Axe
SPS Charges per day. Each charge spent adds an additional (d6 x d6, RR1s) enchanted wounds to the attack.
Grudge Blade Bonus: Vs Hobgoblins. Blade has an enchanted grudge upon it and glows when its sworn foe is within 44 SQR. For a spoint, the blade inflicts an additional (d10 x 2) enchanted wounds on its foe.

On the 11th day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a LOT!  (Read full story of why here.)

On the 12th day of WEGS-mas,
my DM gave to me a:
Skolar Stick: Quarterstaff
+3 WS. This bonus was determined via a roll on Table II: Strength Bonus (INI Roll). This table randomly generates bonuses from +1 (common) to +6 (extremely rare).

And so ends our little trove bonanza: sixteen trove items were found.

Not bad for a dozen days of delving!
