Who Survived the Zombie World Series?

February 3rd, 2014
News, Zombie World Series I

First a big thanks to all the Players and Zombie Masters who joined us in the Pittsburgh 68 Zombie World Series. The results of these games were tracked and reported below. If we take this series as a case study for a zombie apocalypse, the Zombie World Series has taught us two things:

1. Though humans will prevail (by the skin of their teeth) less than 20% of the population will survive.

2. Those most able to adapt and survive are Waitresses, Bartenders, and Sorority Girls.

The proof is in the stats below!

Series  StatsPR-P68-Cover-2014

The series was played in seven states: Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Games were played at these gaming conventions: Dreamation, Pax East, WittCon, Origins Game Fair, DexCon, World Boardgaming Championships, and Gen Con.

68 games were played as part of the Zombie World Series.
5 games were played in the Mid Season Shuffle.
73 games were played in total.

Player Stats

Pittsburgh 68 is a game that is run by a player called the Zombie Master (who controls the zombies and deals the Shuffling Horror deck). Up to 12 other players take part as the Survivors.

13 Zombie Masters ran series games.
306 players joined those games.
693 Survivors were played in these games.
Only 130 of them survived…

Reel Stats

Like an vintage zombie flick, Pittsburgh 68 is played in 4 Reels (rounds). It can be cut short if all players become zombified. Two endgame mechanics also expedite the ending: (a) when there are more Zombie players to Survivor players, and (b) when there is a sole survivor remaining.

Average game length: 3 Reels

1 game ended in Reel 1
8 games ended in Reel 2
25 games ended in Reel 3
39 games ended in Reel 4

The majority of the games make it to Reel 4.

Who Survived?!?PR-P68-Box-Contents-2014

The Shuffling Horror deck has 12 characters, and these are evenly divided among the Survivor players (up to three each). In a game with four players, all start with three Survivors. With twelve players, all start with a single survivor.

33 games out of 73 were survivor victories.
11 of these 33 survivor victories were won by a sole survivor.

Those who survived the most games were:

The Waitress, 14 Wins

The Bartender, 13 Wins

The Sorority Girl, 13 Wins

The Kid Sister and the Business Man survived the least. It should be noted that the Kid Sister and Little Brother cards were not used for all game sessions.

Director Notes

Two series games pushed the extremes:

One game ended in the first reel; this game had four players with 3 Survivors each.

One game ended with all 12 characters still alive; this was a game versus four players as well.

A game versus four players is the toughest to win for the Zombie Master.

Big thanks to all those were participated in the Pittsburgh 68 Zombie World Series!

We could not have done this without you!

Zombie World Series-Final Results

January 3rd, 2014
News, Zombie World Series I

The results are in for the final two games of the Pittsburgh 68 Zombie World Series! Our year-long, sixty-eight game series came to its chilling conclusion on New Year’s Eve. The Survivors fought the Zombies all the way to the bitter end.

After Game 66, the Zombies had shambled ahead by a single game lead. In order to survive the series, the Survivors had to secure back-to-back wins. Game 67 and Game 68 started simultaneously in two different states: one in Ohio and one in New Jersey. Located exactly halfway between these two games, Pittsburgh had Zombies closing in on both sides; an epic last stand for survival was about to begin!

The Ohio game pitted the Zombie Master against six players (each had two Survivors for their hand).  In New Jersey, the Zombie Master faced four players (each with three Survivors for their hand). In both games all twelve Survivors were in play. The Zombies were going to have to work hard to claw their way to victory.

The Ohio game ended with four survivors still standing: Little Brother, Sorority Girl, Sheriff, and Waitress. Eight survivors didn’t make it to the final reel! The New Jersey game ended with six survivors still standing: Little Brother, Waitress, Bartender, Farmer, Nurse, Housewife. All in all, twenty-four starting Survivors were whittled down to ten by the zombies.

Both session were pretty lethal but, alas, no zombie victory was in the cards!

P68-Game-68-Final

The final series score was Survivors 36 and Zombies 35. It is amazing that the series finished with such a “skin-of-their-teeth” endgame. It should be noted that the Survivors did gain a three point bonus during the Mid Season Shuffle (May 2013). Without this edge, they would not have survived!

The Pittsburgh 68 Zombie World Series started in Oct 2012 and took a little over a year to play out. Thirteen individual Zombie Masters participated in the series and reported the results of their games back to the GameWick Games Zombie HQ. Many series games were featured at game conventions in 2013, too: Gen Con, Origins Game Fair, Pax East, Dreamation, Dexcon, and the World Boardgaming Championships.

Big thanks to all our Zombie Masters and all the players who joined in as Survivors!

Zombie World Series: Game 66

December 21st, 2013
News, Unexpected Twist, Zombie World Series I

The end is drawing near for the Pittsburgh 68 Zombie World Series! With only two games to go, the Zombies have clawed their way to a single game lead, breaking the dead heat.

Game 66 pitted three players against the Zombie Master. There was an unexpected twist at the start of Reel three when the first three cards in the Dealt Hand were all Familiar Faces (zombified survivors)! At that time only the Sheriff, the Farmer, and the Bartender were in play, so things looked grim from the start. The movie ended shortly thereafter – but not before introducing the two final Survivors: The Kid Sister and The Sorority Girl (who was the last one standing).

The Final Shuffle: Games 62-63

October 31st, 2013
News, Zombie World Series I

As we stumble upon Halloween, the Pittsburgh 68 Zombie World Series is once again in a dead heat! Two games have been played since our last update: both were zombie victories and played in two of our favorite little game shops: The Compleat Strategist (NYC) and Time Warp Comics and Games (NJ).

P68-Final-5

Game #62 went down at The Compleat Strategist and was over in three reels. Game #63 was played at Time Warp Comics and Games  and went a full four reels. The latter game had the makings of a sunny Survivor victory all the way through the middle of Reel 3… Then things took a real bad turn.

Only five games to go in our sixty-eight game series!

The Final Shuffle: Games 60-68

October 1st, 2013
News, Zombie World Series I

As October creeps upon us, the final games of the Pittsburgh 68 Zombie World Series begin. Two games were played in Ohio last month and delivered two Survivor wins. This broke the dead heat score of 31/31 and has given the Survivors a two game lead.  Seven games remain!

The series began during Halloween week last year.

It’s fitting that we wrap it all up this month in true zombie style!

P68 ZWS: Dead Heat

August 27th, 2013
News, Zombie World Series I

The fourth and final quarter of the Pittsburgh 68 Zombie World Series kicked off at Gen Con 2013! The Survivors started this last quarter with a comfortable four game lead, and so, there was no room for any idle shuffling by our Pittsburgh zombies!

The first game was played on Wednesday, Gen Con Fan Night. The Zombies wasted no time in showing a little undead vengeance – and they didn’t let up until the end! A total of eight series games were run (Games 52 thru 59). Of these games, the Zombies took 6 and the Survivors only 2. Now, the score is tie: 31/31.

Only nine games to go in our 68 game series!

Nothing like going into the final stretch in a dead heat…
