Trove Roll: Turdragon Special

November 26th, 2015

FB-Trove-Roll-77It’s Thanksgiving Day here in the USA, and we’re celebrating by rolling out some trove for the Feast of Turdragons! We’re starting with the best possible result on Table I: Trove Pile Generator (d%) , which, as some of you have heard, is found in the Trove chapter in the Old Skool Odds-n-Gods Vol I tome (see anticipated publishing date at end of article).

As noted in the Table I title, the game master rolls percentile dice to find out what treasure awaits the dungeon delvers. As any WEGS player would expect, Wicked Success results (01, 02, 03) trigger something very very good, while Wicked Failure results (97, 98, 99, 00) trigger something awful. We’re skipping that roll, and giving you the best Table I can offer:

01 – Roll thrice more on this table (ignore Wicked Failures).”

Now, let’s start rolling…

D% Roll #1 = 32 – Table V: Weapons
D% Roll #2 = 17 – Table IV: Armour
D% Roll #3 = 0-00 – Cursed Item with Ego. Lucky for you, the original Wicked Success blocks this Wicked Failure result (there’s not much worse than a cursed sword with an attitude.) So, let’s re-roll:
D% Roll #3 = 94 – Table IX: Massive Trove. Now we’re talking trove with a capital T!

For each of the table results above, the GM rolls a d10 to find out what the trove item is.
Here’s how they rolled out:

Table V – Weapon: Blades.
+2 Scimitar

Table IV – Armour: Greaves.
Half Leg, +4 Armour

Table IX – Massive Trove – Special.
The first roll on Table IX was a 10, which instructs the GM to “Roll again on this table and then again on Table I”. This added these items to the turdragon hoard:

Table IV – Armour: Scale Armour.
Coat of Plates, +8 Armour. Special: Elfland Scale.

Table IX – Massive Trove: Ogma’s Majestic Hammer
The Hammer of the Gods in the Wegswyrld! It is so mighty, that it deserves its own dedicated blog entry. So, we’ll wait until all the turdragon feathers settle around here and do that post next week!

Odds-n-Gods, Vol I…

It will definitely be published before Odds-n-Gods, Vol II.

Proto Review-Roswell 51 and the Shuffle Board

November 25th, 2015

The Shuffling Horror Shuffle Board and Roswell 51 are planned 2016 releases.
This review is based on our prototype and playtest decks.

DexCon is a local NJ game convention for the GameWick Gang. This year we rolled out the Shuffling Horror Shuffle Board prototype, as well as the Roswell 51 playtest deck. Tom Tiernan, a game reviewer and movie buff, came by to check these out. He had played Pittsburgh 68 with us at a prior DexCon and was very interested to see what the next Shuffling Horror movie was all about. Here are some of his findings:

Blog-Mini-R51-Newspaper“Roswell 51 is another winner from GameWick Games. Dive head first into a 1950’s B movie, as you and your fellow citizens fight off the second invasion force from the planet Mercury! The first invasion went badly for the Mercurians in 1947, but they’re back with a vengeance. All of the craziness from those great flicks are here… from Invasion of the Body Snatchers to Plan 9 from Outer Space. You’ll find more than enough thrills to keep you playing this game over and over.”

“As with Pittsburgh 68, the game is divided into four reels, like a film used to be. Each of the first three reels gets more dangerous and exciting… You’ll play one of the Roswell residents thrown into a desperate battle for the survival of Earth itself. You’ll find weapons of various sorts mixed in with the monsters in each reel. There are also a handful of citizens who must be protected, or they’ll come back as Pod People to attack you.”

“The Shuffling Horror line encapsulates each era they take place in. Both Pittsburgh 68 and Roswell 51 work brilliantly. The <Shuffling Horror Shuffle Board> is an excellent compliment to Shuffling Horror, and I personally couldn’t see myself playing these games without it. It takes away any confusion there may be in setting up and playing the games.”  Read Tom Tiernan’s full review here on his blog (external link).

Science Fiction Double Feature (Gen Con 2015)

November 22nd, 2015

This past summer, at Gen Con 2015, GameWick Games went all in with our biggest event yet: The Shuffling Horror Science Fiction Double Feature. The event was run on Thursday night and had four tables of simultaneous sessions of Pittsburgh 68 (our zombie feature) and Roswell 51 (our sci-fi invasion playtest). Players even got to play upon our Shuffling Horror Shuffle Board prototype.

Big thanks to the Directors who ran the game sessions: Adam, Andy, Jason, and Mike!

Look for the Return of Shuffling Horror at Gen Con 2016!

The Tell-Tale Shuffle Board (Part 1)

November 21st, 2015

“It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain;
but once conceived, it haunted me day and night.”

The Tell-Tale Heart, Edgar Allan Poe, 1843

Back in 2012, GameWick Games released its creepy little zombie game Pittsburgh 68, the first game in the Shuffling Horror series. The game and its title paid tribute to the birthplace of American zombie horror and the 1968 cult classic movie, Night of the Living Dead. The game is designed to  be played and dealt in a style similar to poker. As such, Pittsburgh 68 did not need a proper playing board.

Blog-Pic-SHB-15-TellTale1BUT… In 2013, I designed a simple demo mat for our summer game convention play: a nylon cloth with card slots on it (shown on left). The purpose of this mat was threefold: (1) it was something to catch a passerby’s eye, (2) it would answer their question, “What the heck game are you playing there?”, and (3) it gave us a nice clean surface to play upon, no matter where we found ourselves playing.

UNEXPECTEDLY… Players loved it. Many inquired if it was included in the game or for sale at our booth. I joked that maybe we’d add a board after we finished the Shuffling Horror series. I still had three more “movies” to make: Roswell 51, Innsmouth 32, and Balitmore 94.

THEN… I trotted the mat out again for our 2014 game events, and, again, the inquiries of our players and fans continued. At this same time, I was trying to figure out a way to launch my first Kickstarter. It finally clicked: the Shuffling Horror Shuffle Board would be a great first project. It would give our fans an opportunity to guide the Shuffling Horror line to its next destination. It would also be a great way to introduce GameWick Games to the Kickstarter community.

Blog-Pic-SH-P68+CaskAND SO…. In 2015, I spent the year working on the board’s design. I knew this could not and would not be just a board with card slots on it. My goal was to make sure the board elevated game play from its original poker style to a cinematic spectacle.

Most importantly, the board had to add value to the game itself.

Every convention I attended this year found me bringing a new and improved version to play upon. The Shuffle Board progressed from its line art prototype to its near finished form thanks to the feedback of our players, friends, and fans.

(The picture on the left is a glimpse of a Shuffle Board prototype around June 2015; also in the pic is a wicked Cask of Amontillado tiki mug from Horror In Clay’s kickstarter).

Thus ends the first part of The Tell-Tale Shuffle Board. Many more of the Shuffle Board’s dark secrets will be revealed in future installments (to coincide with its upcoming Kickstarter launch).

Shuffling Horror Week 2015: Game 4+5

November 1st, 2015

Game #4 and #5 of the Zombie World Series 2015 went down at All Things Fun in West Berlin, New Jersey. Going into these final two games, Team Survivor was ahead by a single game. Team Zombie needed back-to-back wins to take the series lead. Here are the highlights from each game.

Game #4 began with The Kid Sister as a zombie appetizer before the game even began. A horrid start! Her demise was due to the Hold Them Back plot device card in the Opening Scene. This gave the players a glimpse on just how brutal The Game Of Shuffling Horror can be. It’s hard to say if this shock galvanized the team, but the Survivors completely annihilated the zombies from that point forward. As soon as the zombies were set up for attack, the team trimmed them back. Sorority Girl + Baseball Bat was shockingly effective, as was The Nurse, who had a knack for rolling Hard Four for her attacks (gaining her a damage bonus). These odd moments made the game so much fun!

SHW-15-Score-41Game #5 was a different story; it ended in the early moments of Reel 3. For most of the game, the Director maintained three healthy zombie throngs. By Reel 3, the Director was five throngs deep. One of the best parts of the game was the story. One player started with The Sorority Girl and then drew the Little Sister and Kid Brother. It was obviously her baby-sitting gig that was about to become a nightmare. She protected the kids as best she could (noting that this was way beyond her $10 an hour rate). In the end, both kids were lost and she found herself the Last One Standing. Somehow, she survived seven zombie attacks, winning one more game for Team Survivor. So much fun, but not for the zombies!

The Game 4 & 5 Recap
